‘Bullseye’: local youth heading to national darts competition

Some local youth are hoping to hit the bullseye at a national tournament for darts.

Konnor Labach and Shanae Johnstone won at provincials last month and will soon travel to Quebec for the Youth Nationals in Darts, May 16-23.

For Konnor, 9, he first picked up darts roughly five years ago with his Dad, Khris. At first, it turned into a fun hobby, until Khris discovered there was more there.

“He picked it up and he was a natural right at the start,” he said. “He comes and plays against adults at a dart league at the Eks in town and he’s beating adults. I figured I’d put him in provincials and see how he does, and he tore it up.”

So, what does Konnor love the most about playing darts?

“Probably just getting a bunch of points is my favourite, and I like hitting the triple 20 lots, feels good when you do,” he said.

When it comes to the big tournament, Konnor said he’s both excited and nervous at the same time. For Khris, it’s a proud moment seeing him succeed in this sport.

“I couldn’t be more proud. It’s a pleasure to watch him play and get better and grow into the game, he loves it,” he said.

Khris added they are hosting some fundraisers including a Steak Night on March 19 at the Rock and Iron to help pay for flights and hotels for the father-son team.
