Black History Month: family continuing to leave legacy in P.A. after immigrating over 110 years ago

One of the first Black families to immigrate to Saskatchewan is continuing to leave a positive mark in the area they settled in.

paNOW is recognizing Black individuals who’ve left their mark on the community in honour of Black History Month.

Robert and Luvina Miller, who were each born after the American Civil War, decided to move to Canada in 1910 where they would raise their three kids and work as homesteaders.

They ended up choosing to live in Whitfield, which is currently a little northwest of Prince Albert.

According to Jim Miller, Robert and Luvina’s grandson, they were treated very well by their new neighbours.

“This community was probably one of the best ones in the province,” he said. “It’s kind of unique as it had every ethnic group that had come to Canada, and everyone seemed to help one another.”

The Millers ended up acquiring hundreds of acres of land which to this day remain in the family. Jim explained his father-in-law currently owns it after he bought it from his father.

It’s been over 110 years since the Millers moved to the Prince Albert area. What started out as a family of five has turned into another four generations of Millers.

Ron Miller, another one of Robert and Luvina’s grandsons, believes his grandparents would be overjoyed to see how their family has been thriving.

“If grandpa and grandma were here now I think they’d be pretty shocked.”

He explained the family has been quite successful and has been integral community members. He highlighted Jim as a great example as he had previously served as Buckland’s Fire Chief.

“(My grandparents) were very well respected, my dad was very well respected, and us kids are well respected,” added Ron.

In August 2022, Ron inadvertently showed why many people in the Prince Albert area respect the Millers so much. After a random couple got into an accident outside of Taco Time, a restaurant he owns, he lent them his vehicle so they could drive down to Saskatoon for a family birthday.

To this day, the Miller family continues to leave their mark on the community’s history.
