Local radio personalities celebrate major milestones

Feb 16, 2023 | 8:00 AM

For decades and decades, they have been the voices you heard on your morning drive and ride back home.

You have laughed with their jokes and maybe even shared in their rage over certain issues of the day.

This week, Lew Harrison celebrated 30 years on the air in Prince Albert while Garth Kalin marked 41 years in the radio industry.

Kalin looked back on what has been quite the ride in radio.

“It’s a bit surreal to think I’ve been in this one career, basically working almost for one company most of my radio career, as well.”

He added the best memories he has is of the different people he’s met and talked with including big names in the music industry.

“Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, KISS, the list goes on.”

Those who worked alongside these two also shared their fondest memories and offered congratulations on their anniversaries.

Former Prince Albert Mayor Jim Scarrow hired Lew Harrison when he was general manager of the station and had nothing but strong words for him.

“As a broadcaster, he was and continues to be a strong advocate for our industry,” he said. “At the base, he has such good qualities that make him such a good broadcaster. He’s got a very good sense of community and what’s important and what’s vital in order to grow an audience and maintain an audience.”

The same sentiments were echoed by former Program Director John Wessel who had some fun while talking about Lew.

“In my world, 30 years still makes you a rookie,” he joked. “I think you probably have stretch marks on your gums because you talk all the time. Big congratulations and here’s to the next 30.”

Last month, Harrison was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for his years of service to Saskatchewan Scouts.
