Sheila Caroline Parker was born on January 8, 1934, in Harris, Saskatchewan and passed away on February 9, 2023 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Her parents were Ella Matilda Dalgiesh and George Wilson Parker. She married Albert “Bert” Robert in Steep Creek on July 26, 1950, and after 67 years of a full, vibrant and loving married life, he passed away on January 3, 2018.
Sheila’s older sister Phyllis was a lifelong friend until her passing, and her four brothers, Edward and Vernon Parker, and John and Edward Cassel, remained in touch as they moved across Canada. She joined the Robert family of 6 brothers-in law and 3 sisters-in law. Phyllis married Joe, Bert’s brother, and the families were always close as a result.
They began their lives together in a very small home near the Robert homestead, but soon, in 1957, they moved to Prince Albert and with Bert working at Burns Meat Packing Plant, they soon were able to build their dream home at 8th St and 10th Ave and moved into it in 1962.
A loving and dedicated mother, Sheila is survived by her children Ken (Debbie) Robert, Marlene Dayman, Wayne (Stephen Dickey) Robert and Maxine (Darrell) Dragseth and her grandchildren, Brook, Kristinn, Aaron, Emily, Kala, and Kody, as well as her great-grandchildren, Fynn, Rosa, Chloe, Opal and Hayden, and many nieces and nephews.
Sheila defeated cancer in 2010 but was left with ongoing health issues which she faced without complaint; her stoicism was a model for her friends and family.
Known in school as an athlete, and a fast runner in particular, Sheila was a very competitive sportswoman all her life. She and Bert won many trophies in Bowling, Curling and Golf over the years – dozens of which were donated to charity to use for children’s events when they downsized to move out to Emma Lake in 1992. Sheila was in the main a stay-at-home mom. However, once the children were old enough and all in school, she began to work outside the home, first part-time over the Christmas season at Carment’s Jewellers for many years, and then as the manager of Sportsman Bowling alley, and later she managed Kachur’s Emma Lake Golf course.
Sheila was a rapid learner and a self-taught seamstress, knitter, crocheter, and pretty much anything else she set her mind to. Those who knew her knew that she was always ready to roll up her sleeves and pitch in. She also took opportunities to put her skills to work in many ways, for instance she made ‘Winter Festival Hats” and ‘Mukluks’ out of recycled fur coats (she was ahead of her time!) which became a festival icon and local celebrities sported them as they hosted the festivities. Her ‘Siwash’ sweaters were coveted, and her baby sweater sets were a special gift for many new mothers.
An avid and experimental cook, she was always happiest hosting meals and parties. Her dinner buns, butter tarts and cinnamon buns were legendary! When Bert retired and they moved out to Emma Lake full-time, their place was a gathering place for many meals and parties – and they always had a wide range of ages of family and friends present and welcome.
All who knew her were blessed by her kind-heartedness and determination, and we all will miss ‘Gramma’.
A celebration will be planned for later in the year and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
