PA Panthers ready for season ahead after major off-season changes

Jan 27, 2023 | 1:00 PM

The Prince Albert Panthers cricket club is gearing up for the new season after some notable off-season changes.

The most noticeable change the team made was to the identity itself, changing the logo and colours from a black and gold python to a black and red panther.

President of the Prince Albert Cricket Association Mohib Mohammed explained to paNOW the reason for the change.

“We just wanted to do everything from scratch,” he said. “Majority of the players who were with the team during the inauguration of the Pythons aren’t here anymore except for a couple of people. Excluding them, everyone on the team this year is new to our squad. We wanted to make a change and see how it works out with the team right now.”

Last Saturday, the Panthers hosted tryouts for the upcoming season where Mohammed said that about 10 people showed up with more people coming to watch from the stands.

Panthers team captain Ramneet Singh shared his thoughts on how his team is shaping up going into the season.

“Last year was a bit of a struggle for us just with players coming and going,” he said. “But I’m really excited, we have a very strong squad this year and I’m looking forward to having a great season this coming year.”

Mohammed also expressed excitement for the future of cricket in Prince Albert as he teased a new cricket team coming to the city.

“We actually have one more team that is going to be registering with Prince Albert,” he said. “So pretty soon, we’ll have two teams playing in PA. We’re currently in talks with the other team but they’re still in the registration process and once everything finalizes, we can disclose the name and that stuff.”

The season schedule for the Panthers has not yet been released but the club is set to host the 2023 Canadian Tire Cricket Cup at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse on March 11. According to Mohammed, the tournament has just two spots left for teams wanting to join.
