Hitchings, Dorothy
Dorothy Hitchings (nee Rosen) of Big River, SK passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 17, 2023, with her children by her side.
Dorothy was born in Edson, Alberta on May 11, 1940, and always loved the mountains. She married her husband, George, in 1963, and was a loving wife until George passed in March 2000. Dorothy is survived by her two children, Edith and Kelly (Bev), grandchildren Shawn, Ryan (Niketa) and Brandy (Matthew) and great-grandchildren Kaidan, Sophia, Colten, Dominic and Stephen, and sisters Ellen, Karen and Kathleen and many sisters in law, nieces and nephews. Dorothy is pre-deceased by her parents, her brother Alfred, sister June and numerous others.
Dorothy was generous, giving, strong, stubborn and fiercely independent. She lived life her own way. She loved bingo, berry picking, and mowing the grass. She welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and something to drink or eat. Her laugh was unique and contagious. Not much scared her, including the bears that made her acreage their home from time to time. Dorothy was also famous for her quilts and people from all over enjoyed seeing her at the Big River Farmer’s Market, with her pieces of art displayed. When she could no longer cope with the demands of the market, she kept making quilt tops with her stash of material. Her sisters assembled over 50 quilts from those tops and donated them to charities across Saskatchewan and Alberta. Her “Blue Jean Quilts” were hotly pursued, and those that she gave such a quilt felt honored by the gift, and knew they were loved. There was a special gift or message hidden in each quilt, specifically for the recipient, such as initials, special pockets, carrying bags, favorite colors etc.
The family would like to thank the Big River Health Centre and numerous friends and community members for their care of Dorothy. We will be forever grateful for your kindness.
Dorothy has requested no service be held. A family gathering will be held in the summer, when we will be scattering her ashes as requested. Flowers are respectfully declined, but donations may be Lakewood Lodge Auxiliary, Box 846 Big River, SK S0J 0E0.
