A major sporting event is coming to Prince Albert later this month.

Special Olympics Saskatchewan and Prince Albert have teamed up with Prince Albert Canadian Tire, to present the 2023 Special Olympics Saskatchewan Floor Hockey Championships.

With the financial support of $10,000 from Canadian Tire, athletes from across Saskatchewan will gather in the city and compete in the hopes of qualifying for Special Olympics Team Sask 2024.

“Having partners like Malcolm and the team at Canadian Tire Prince Albert is vital to being able to generate opportunities for Special Olympics Athletes. With their financial support we are able to ensure the competition is affordable and accessible to all athletes who have worked hard to qualify for this championship,” Faye Matt, Special Olympics Saskatchewan CEO said in a statement.

The competition, taking place at Carlton Comprehensive Public High School, runs from Jan. 27 to 29. Tyler Kowalski, coach of the Prince Albert team, said this is a great opportunity for the players involved, as well as for the city.

“It’s a great opportunity to show Special Olympics Saskatchewan what Prince Albert has to offer and maybe get more events held here,” he said.

A total of eight teams will compete and will come from centres such as Regina, Saskatoon, Humboldt, and Moose Jaw. Local player, 20-year-old Tanner Svenson has been part of special olympics for six years, and said his team’s goal is to win gold.

“I’m just really excited and I’ve been talking non-stop about it,” he said.

A cheque presentation happened Monday morning at Canadian Tire. Store Owner Malcolm Jenkins said it’s a great cause to support.

“At Canadian Tire we try to help kids and youth and health in the community and we can do all three with this one,” he said.
