How to make sure you arrive safely on your Christmas travels

Dec 23, 2022 | 10:00 AM

The Christmas long weekend is finally upon us which means drivers will be out and about visiting friends and family. But do you know what to do to keep yourself safe on the roads in this December weather?

Lyle Karasiuk with Parkland Ambulance has some tips on what you can do to make sure you arrive at your destination and what to do if you have a setback.

He said one item he constantly emphasizes every year with winter drivers is to not leave the vehicle if you’re stranded.

“Please stay with your vehicle! Summon help, stick something out through the window like a scarf or a piece of a blanket to signal to passing motorists that you’re there,” he said. “I know it’s tempting to do so. In an open field area, you have no idea what is under the snow.”

He said it’s easy to fall into snow or in a field, especially if the visibility is low or it is dark.

On top of that, he also wants to stress the importance of packing rightly and making sure emergency supplies are stored.

“Remember to pack along a few extra blankets, dress for the weather,” he said. “Our cars get bogged down with the presents, the gifts, the kids’ toys, and extra clothing and luggage. Remember to try and find room for the safety gear.”

The weekend forecast is calling for extremely cold temperatures throughout Friday which will subside over Christmas with highs around -16 and -19 over the next two days.
