Prince Albert Police part of impaired driving enforcement day

Earlier this month Prince Albert Police were part of a national traffic enforcement focus that saw 1,755 vehicles checked as officers looked for impaired drivers.

Prince Albert was one of 43 checkpoints were set up that also included Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Regina, Weyburn and Estevan police services.

The one-day targeted enforcement resulted in 13 charges of impaired driving for alcohol but also caught four drivers with drug-related impairment that ended up with roadside suspensions.

Another 11 suspensions were given out for alcohol-related impaired driving.

As examples of what officers can find during a traffic blitz, police were notified on December 3 at 10:30 a.m. that an erratic driver almost rear-ended a semi while going a “very high rate of speed” on Highway 16 near Maidstone.

RCMP from the Maidstone detachment found the vehicle parked with only one person in it and no footprints around the vehicle.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation with over .08 blood alcohol content.

Also on December 3, a 911 report led officers from the Moosomin detachment to find a vehicle parked on the wrong side of Moose Street.

During the following traffic stop, officers were told the driver was waiting for a friend.

The 32-year-old woman also refused to provide a breath sample which she was charged with failing to comply with a demand and received 60-day vehicle impound.

One person in the Griffin/Weyburn area was issued a $1,179 fine for driving more than 50 km over the speed limit after being clocked driving 184 km/h in a 100 zone.

The week of December 1 to 7 is Safe Driving Week in Canada so police and other officers across the country were checking vehicles for safety infractions.

Police issued 1,586 warnings, 604 speeding charges, 125 vehicles failed inspections, 100 drivers were charged for being distracted by a cellphone, 73 people had seatbelt tickets, 69 vehicles did not have valid registration, another 27 people did not have a driver’s licence, 17 suspensions and the same number of driving while disqualified charges were laid and another five charges each were laid for impaired driving and driving with open alcohol or unsealed cannabis.
