Prelim date set for Whitehead murder case

Dec 14, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Roughly a year-and-a-half after a young father was shot in the back while standing in the street, the resulting court case has taken one more step towards trial.

Kyle Crain, 31, is facing a charge of accessory after the fact, in the death of 23-year-old Drexlyr Whitehead.

When the matter was spoken to Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, a preliminary inquiry date was confirmed for March 27.

The purpose of the hearing will be to hear the Crown’s evidence, and the judge will make a decision on whether it’s sufficient enough to commit the case to trial.

On June 20, 2021, at approximately 2 pm, police were called to the 1900 block of 14th Street West for a weapons complaint. On arrival, police located the victim in the street, and he was soon after declared deceased.

Crain was arrested thirteen months later and made his first court appearance on July 21.

The motive for the killing has not yet been released, but there have been suggestions it was gang-related.
