Federal government allocating $600K to plant trees around P.A. and area

The federal government is allocating nearly $600,000 to plant trees in the Prince Albert area.

Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of natural resources, announced on Monday 54 projects across the country would be splitting $37 million as part of a commitment to plant two billion trees over the next 10 years.

The Prince Albert Model Forest Association Inc. (PAMF) is getting $299,000 to plant 7,500 saplings around P.A. and several First Nation communities.

The federal government said this project was chosen as it will “increase forest cover and provide clean air.”

PAMF will also provide training opportunities for youth to help them develop skills in planting trees for future endeavors.

Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, which is around 95 km southeast of Prince Albert, is getting $300,000 from the federal government for its own project.

The First Nation is planning on planting 500 saplings on reserve land as part of a demonstration project. Residents also expected to work with a local nursery to build internal capacity to support additional future tree planting.

The only other project in Saskatchewan getting funding through this announcement is happening in Saskatoon.

Meewasin Valley Authority and the city of Saskatoon are getting $172,500 to help create a “connected and equitable green network,” according to the Canadian government. Some of the planned activities include getting more people out planting trees and expanding seed and cutting collection programs.

Each of these projects are expected to be completed within the next two years.
