Fire department responds to alarm, spots real house fire across street

As the Prince Albert fire department was going to a fire alarm call at the 500 block of 19^th Street East several days ago, the alert driver of the truck spotted an issue across the street.

The first residence was on the south side of the street and did not actually have a fire. But to the north and one house over, there was indeed a fire.

“There was a fire burning on the deck, that was sort of smoldering at that point and had been burning for a period of time,” said Deputy Fire Chief Alex Paul.

The operator of the truck was waiting in the vehicle while other firefighters went into check out the alarm in the first house.

“They immediately went across the street and called for additional trucks to come from the hall and fought the structure fire.”

It is not uncommon for the fire department to find multiple garbage can fires but having a second one in a house is not normal.

Because of the alarm call, the damage to the second house was very limited.

“The house is definitely salvageable. There’s very little smoke damage inside. The fire had started on the exterior and burned into the basement,” Paul said.

There is a little bit of smoke damage in the basement and some charring on the floor joists but most the house is fine.
