PAGC donates winter clothing to Ukrainian newcomers

The Ukrainian newcomers living in Prince Albert are now much more prepared for their first Canadian winter.

The Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) donated winter clothing on Friday to any new residents wanting a bit of help adjusting to their new lives.

“The families were able to choose the correct sizes and correct items for their children so that they can keep warm this winter,” Sonya Jahn, who’s overseeing all of P.A.’s Ukrainian newcomers, said.

Families and individuals got the chance to pick up a new jacket, toque and gloves, ski pants, and more. PAGC also handed out different food hampers filled with vegetables and meat.

Betty Marleau, who oversaw the donation from PAGC, told paNOW they want this to be seen as a message that they’re welcomed and supported here in the community.

“They are experiencing incredible hardships so (PAGC) wanted to do something for them because they understand about hardships and wanted to welcome them,” Marleau said.

Marleau also joked they wanted to make sure they can survive the winter weather which, on average, is much colder than what they would experience in Ukraine.

“Some of them are glad to be getting another jacket as they’ll probably need a second jacket over their other jacket,” she noted.

Meanwhile, Jahn added she expects more newcomers will be moving to P.A. in the near future. Right now, there are well over 100 newcomers living in the city, including 36 families.
