Conservation Learning centre receives over $40K for new cold frames

A local non-profit has just received a generous grant to further advance its programs to students and help protect some of its crops from mother nature.

The Conservation Learning Centre recently found out it was one of four organizations that won funding from Peavey Industries, as a part of its annual Community Agricultural Grant program.

The $40,000 in funding will make it possible for the Conservation Learning Centre to purchase and build two 96’ x 20’ gothic cold frames. One will serve as a Community Cold Frame for school groups, local organizations, and the public. The second will operate as a Research Cold Frame and be used to conduct horticultural trials that will generate actionable information for vegetable and fruit producers across western Canada.

A cold frame is a transparent outdoor frame used in gardens to protect plants from adverse weather, primarily intense cold or wet weather.

“Students participating in our programs with the community cold frame will be able to use the environment of the cold frame as a living laboratory,” says Robin Lokken, General Manager of the Conservation Learning Centre. “This project will also expand on the horticultural research being conducted in and for the northern prairies by making it possible for us to run horticultural trials in our unique climate.”

Each year, the Conservation Learning Centre hosts a mix of long and short-term projects that highlight soil and water conservation and showcase new agricultural technologies.
