Montreal Lake Cree Nation man remembered as humble and hard-working

Nov 9, 2022 | 9:30 AM

A man found deceased in Prince Albert over the weekend is being remembered as a humble, hard-working person.

On Sunday morning, police were called to an area behind a business in the Cornerstone shopping district for reports of a deceased man.

The man has been identified as Wallace Bird, 52. Though police have not confirmed his cause of death yet, the Chief of Montreal Lake Cree Nation where Bird resided told paNOW he had died of exposure after she spoke to the coroner.

Chief Joyce Naytowhow-McLeod said Bird was a respected member of the community.

“He was a very humble man. He also worked hard. He lived in the community and was a very hard worker. He was a part of the commercial fishing team. He also participated in the church group.”

While few details have emerged as to why Bird was in the area at the time, Naytowhow-McLeod stressed that he was not homeless.

“Some people thought he was homeless, but he wasn’t homeless. He had places to stay in the community,” she said, “He just happened to come in on a weekend to the city. He doesn’t know anybody; he doesn’t know where the shelters are.”

Police are still investigating the death and have deemed it not suspicious and an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
