River Riders to honour best-of-the-best after claiming Bantam championship

A local football team will soon honour the best of the season after a big championship win over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Bantam River Riders claimed the Kinsmen Football League Championship, 7-6 over the Raiders in Saskatoon.

For many players, it was the perfect way to end their Bantam careers, a league title and an unbeaten season.

One of those players is safety and defensive captain Miller Childress.

“It’s a pretty big moment for sure,” he said recalling the championship. “Last season, we didn’t do so good, so it was big to come back and win it.”

One of his teammates, running back and offensive captain Rylan Morrison was also still reeling from the big moment on Sunday.

“It feels great. An undefeated season — [we] never had it before,” he said. “Last year wasn’t the best; we placed second last, but this feels great and being the running back and having most of those touchdowns, it’s something.”

The game was a back-and-forth defensive battle, with the River Riders eventually closing it out on a late interception.

The team is holding its annual awards ceremony on Tuesday night along with the peewee River Riders who fell just short in the consolation final last month.

Childress and Morrison will be moving on to play high school football with the Carlton Crusaders and both say they can’t wait for that experience.
