Saskatchewan government to increase funding for shelter spaces

The province is lending a helping hand to those who need shelter in the cold Saskatchewan winter.

The provincial government announced Tuesday, it will direct $1.7 million in additional funding toward shelter spaces, increasing the number by 15 per cent.

The hope is to ease seasonal cost pressures for local community groups, according to a media release from the government.

“Our government continues to work hand in hand with community partners to address the complex issue of homelessness,” Minister of Social Services Gene Makowsky said. “This additional funding to community-based service providers is an example of how growth can work for everyone.”

The ministry will provide a total of $800,000 to community partners to ease costs and $900,000 to increase emergency shelter capacity by up to 60 spaces this season in Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Regina. There are discussions in place with shelter providers to determine the number of shelter spaces within each community, the release said.
