MELFORT, Sask. – Tomorrow is World Pasta Day.

Cereals Canada is encouraging all Canadians to celebrate our internationally renowned durum wheat.

Canada Western Amber Durum (CWAD) is in demand around the world. Over the last five years over 23 million tonnes of Canadian durum were exported to 49 countries, including Morocco, Algeria, Italy, the United States, Peru, and Japan.

Prairie-grown CWAD accounts for over half of the world’s durum exports. Cereals Canada pasta technical specialist Kasia McMillin said superior yellow pigmentation, high protein content, good gluten quality, and semolina yield make it a prized wheat for pasta.

“CWAD provides the beautiful, bright yellow colour that pasta makers-and pasta lovers-look for,” McMillin said. “As for texture, pasta made with Canadian durum has a satisfying, firm bite quality that is inherent of its protein content and gluten strength.”

McMillin said CWAD makes the best pasta in the world.

Newly-elected Alberta premier Danielle Smith has decided to keep the same agriculture minister.

Smith named Drumheller-Stettler MLA Nate Horner to the post after unveiling her new cabinet.

Horner’s responsibilities will change slightly as forestry and rural economic development has been dropped, while irrigation has been added to the agriculture portfolio.

“I look forward to building on our government’s historic investment of nearly $1 billion in irrigation infrastructure and supporting an ag sector that’s driving economic growth and job creation,” Horner tweeted.

The new Alberta cabinet was sworn in today.
