Shootings at rural properties result in community-based sentence

A woman responsible for causing a disturbance last year at two rural properties west of Prince Albert has avoided jail time but will have to pay $5,000 in restitution.

At the conclusion of her sentencing hearing Tuesday, Breana Daniels, 27, received a two-year conditional sentence order. This means as long as she can abide by her conditions and stay out of trouble, she can serve her sentence in the community.

Daniels, who is from Mistawasis First Nation, had originally been facing a total of 22 charges but as a result of discussions between lawyers, would enter guilty pleas to two: possession of stolen property and possession of a weapon while inside a vehicle.

The background

In the early morning hours of June 19, 2021, a truck, an ATV, and four firearms were reported stolen from buildings on a rural property in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Shellbrook.

The suspects then entered the home, where they were confronted by the owner, and a shot was fired through a window into the home as the suspects fled. Those inside the residence were fortunately not physically injured.

Later that evening, the suspects were spotted in the stolen truck, which was stuck in a ditch on grid road 788. Police said shots were fired at two members of the public before the suspects took off in another truck. It drove into a field and the suspects then ran off toward a residence.

They were later tracked down with the assistance of a police dog unit and help from the Prince Albert Police Service.

In addition to Daniels, two 16-year-old boys were also charged.
