MELFORT, Sask. – The Alberta harvest has wrapped up well ahead of the five-year average.

Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development (AFRED) said combining of major crops was at 99.2 per cent complete.

Dry weather and normal fall temperatures helped to speed up the last of the harvest. By region, the south was officially complete at 100 per cent, the northeast at 99.4 per cent and the central area at 99 per cent. The northwest and Peace regions are 98.3 per cent finished.

Alberta ended up with sufficient livestock feed supplies for the coming winter after sufficient rainfall in June.

This will be the last time data is collected from the Canola Performance Trials (CPT). The program will be disbanded following this year’s harvest.

CPT was created to provide canola growers with impartial data comparing different canola varieties.

In a letter signed by the executive directors of the three provincial organizations, it was determined that the program was no longer meeting the needs of canola growers in its current format.

The program included 27 small-plot trials and 64 field-scale trials while data was collected comparing yield, days to maturity, and lodging scores.

Seed was provided by several companies including BASF – InVigor, BrettYoung Seeds, Corteva-Brevant, CANTERRA Seeds, Bayer-DEKALB, Corteva-Pioneer, Nutrien-Proven Seeds, and Winfield United-CROPLAN.

The Canola Performance Trials (CPT) program began in 2011 and was funded by canola grower groups in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba.

Representatives from the European Union and 28 other countries are touring Saskatchewan this week.

Premier Scott Moe said the province has the food, fuel, and fertilizer the world needs, and these diplomatic missions strengthen its place on the world stage.

In Regina, the heads of mission from Ottawa’s foreign diplomatic corps are to visit the legislature, a tech incubator, a farm, and food terminal, before visiting Lieutenant-Governor Russ Mirasty at Government House.

The delegation will then travel to Saskatoon, with stops at a diamond laboratory, a distillery, and Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
