RISING STAR

Rosthern and Spruce Home welcome Jake Vaadeland

Residents of Spruce Home will soon hear from one of Saskatchewan’s rising music stars.

Jake Vaadeland and the Sturgeon River Boys will perform at the Spruce Home Activity Centre on Friday night.

The show follows another performance in Rosthern on Thursday and other shows in cities like Saskatoon, Regina, and Calgary.

Speaking to paNOW about the shows, Jake said he enjoys performing in smaller venues because it suits the style of who he is as a musician.

“I like the old-time feel, especially in smaller communities out in the country with some people who don’t necessarily hear about us or can’t make it into the city to see us. It’s nice to bring the show to them.,” he said.

Much like the old days of bands travelling to towns and Legion halls, Vaadeland said performing to those crowds is more personal than in larger venues, adding many are curious about the music or can’t make it to a show in a larger city.

Vaadeland the Sturgeon River Boys blend a mix of bluegrass and rockabilly music. For Vaadeland he said the use of an upright bass and even an electric guitar was something he had to get used to.

“When I was younger, I listened to Johnny Cash and Elvis, but I always remember bluegrass being a part of my childhood in the farming community where I grew up.”

Eventually, though, he said it has worked and the group has been touring successfully with their bold, yet classic style.

“We’ve got this unique sound to it. I’m very happy with the way it turned out.”

So what can you expect if you head to Spruce Home for the show on Friday? Vaadeland says they strive to do more than just perform their songs.

“It’s not just music. When you come to a show, we’re going to put on a show. The thing we like to strive for is not just to be musicians but entertainers. I like to try and keep the audience laughing and happy.”

You can find out more about Vaadeland’s show and his music at the band’s official website.
