The Brandon Wheat Kings announced on Thursday that the team has signed Matthew Henry to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

The club listed the Prince Albert product back in 2021. He spent last season playing for the SJHL’s Battlefords North Stars.

“I was really excited and honoured to be given this opportunity,” he said. “I came to camp, worked hard and I feel like I deserved it. Everything sort of fell into place the way I wanted it so I’m very happy for sure.”

Last season with the North Stars, Henry tallied 16 points and 216 penalty minutes in 52 games. Prior to playing in North Battleford, Henry played minor hockey in Prince Albert for the Pirates and Raiders U15 teams and suited up for one game with the Mintos.

The Wheat Kings are slated to visit the Art Hauser Centre three times this season. When asked about playing in his hometown rink again, Henry said he was excited and looking forward to the dates against the Raiders at the Hauser.

“It’s definitely going to be different,” he said. “Playing there in midget, the fans were always super supportive so hopefully they’ll be the same and not be mean to me.”

The Wheat Kings first game against Prince Albert will take place Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Brandon will be back twice more on Jan. 7 and March 7.

The Raiders pre-season continues on Friday and Saturday in a home-and-home versus the Regina Pats.
