Scorching Labour Day long weekend not unheard of

Normally the weather over the September long weekend is in the low 20s, but people can expect up to 34 degrees over the next few days.

While not the norm, this is not unheard of, said Jesse Wagar, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“We are experiencing very warm temperatures and those are expected to continue over the next several days,” she said. “We have a pretty warm ridge of high pressure that’s moving through very slowly.”

“We have seen temperatures into the 30s the first week of September before. I mean its not unheard of to see these temperatures at this time of year,” Wagar said.

However, the risk of heat-related illness is still high, and people should be cautious and think about re-scheduling outdoor activities to cooler times of day, stay hydrated and don’t leave a person or pet inside a closed vehicle during the day as it can be very dangerous.

There are no statistics for Canada but in the United States, about 37 people die in hot vehicles every year with most being three years old or younger. So far this year, 46 pets or companion animals have died in hot vehicles in the US.

Leaving a window open does very little to stop the interior from being dangerously hot, taking about one hour to reach 35 degrees.

A two-year-old will meet the criteria for sunstroke in one hour for a vehicle in the sun and two hours for a vehicle left in the shade on a hot day.

Saturday is expected to reach 31°C but Sunday and Monday will be even hotter at 34°C and 33°C before temperatures start to drop.

“We expect that people will be outside and enjoying it but just be safe and take those precautions and be aware of those heat-related illnesses that can sometimes happen with temperatures at this level,” said Wagar.
