Goat therapy: local farm uses animals as a way of relaxation

Aug 31, 2022 | 5:35 PM

A local farm is using their animals as a way for others to relax.

Chuck Hawkins travels around Prince Albert and the surrounding area loaning out his animals for the enjoyment of others.

On Wednesday when he was at the Points West Living retirement community, his goats offered up some relaxation to the residents.

“Goats are very therapeutic,” he said. “They’re non-judgmental, they like people and the people here have soaked it all up like a sponge.”

People of all ages were there to enjoy the animals, from children to the elderly. And it wasn’t just goats that were there either. A sheep and a baby pig were also hanging around with the seven goats providing fun for everyone.

As for how he got started in goat therapy, Hawkins said that it’s all thanks to his wife.

“We wanted to get some animals and the nice thing about our animals is that they’re not big,” he said. “They’re easy to handle, they’re not mean, and they’re loveable little creatures.”

Hawkins added that they also do goat yoga a few times a year in the city.
