MELFORT, Sask. – Soon, producers won’t have to fill out Statistics Canada crop production surveys.

The federal agency said it plans to stop asking those questions. Instead, it will use satellite technology, administrative data, and advanced modelling techniques to produce its crop production estimates by 2026.

The new reporting will be called AgZero. StatsCAN already uses the technology to produce two of its four reports. One of those reports was released Monday.

Four of Alberta’s crop commissions will join forces to present a new farmer-focused event.

Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola, Alberta Pulse Growers, and the Alberta Wheat Commission are launching CrossRoads.

The new crop conference, presented by four of the host organizations behind the FarmTech conference, will provide for over 700 farmers and industry members the opportunity to discuss several topics including sustainability, policy, market development, and farm management.

Along with over fifteen concurrent sessions, CrossRoads will also feature high-profile keynote speakers.

The conference will be held at the Edmonton Convention Centre Jan. 24 and 25, 2023.

Milk will cost a bit more for people in New Brunswick.

The New Brunswick Farm Products Commission said milk prices will increase 6.5 cents more per litre beginning Sept. 1.

It said a mid-year price adjustment can be implemented under exceptional circumstances, adding that the last one took place in 2018.

Commission chair Bob Shannon said the increase is needed to help dairy producers and processors deal with rising costs of items like feed, machinery and equipment repairs, fuel and oil, custom work and hired labour.

The Canadian Dairy Commission hiked milk prices in June, and Shannon said he recognizes that a second price increase this year will have an impact on consumers.

The statement said pricing under the School Milk Program will remain unchanged for the coming academic year.
