National dog show offers special treat for Prince Albert

Prince Albert area residents are encouraged to sit and stay at the Exhibition grounds this week.

The All Breeds Championship dog show runs until Thursday afternoon and is hosted by the Prince Albert Kennel Club. President Liana Maloney told paNOW the event can help fetch some big returns to the city

‘”The exhibitors are using our hotels, using our restaurants; like there are 200 new people in town. That’s an influx of people,” she said.

The breeders, dogs, and judges come from all over Canada. There are also two dogs from the U.S and a judge from Australia. Maloney was asked how Prince Albert came to host such an event.

“We have a very active dog club. It’s a small club but it’s very active and we have a dedicated group that really works hard to get a show together twice a year,” she said.

Those heading out to the show this week should not expect to see any fancy tricks or jumps. Maloney explained these dogs are awarded points based on height, width, and even perm length.

“The judges have to know the standards of every individual breed in here. A couple of hundred breeds of dogs, and they judge each dog to the standard,” she explained.

The breeders aim to earn points towards the Canadian championship. Maloney explained for onlookers, the competition proves an opportunity to see many different breeds of dogs, and possibly see which one may best suit their own family.

“Every breed of dog has a different personality, a different temperament, different traits, and every family and every person is different and here you a match your dog to your personality” Maloney adds each of the breeders can also provide valuable information for families with questions.

Priscilla Kornelson’s standard poodle Brigg is among the competitors who stand out, and for obvious reasons. Kornelson, who is from Calgary, was excited to come to Prince Albert.

“It’s just a great opportunity for a lot of shows in just a few days and we get to show off, get some points and hopefully get our next title,” she said.

Valerin Bandas from Craven, has been competing for over 40 years. She’s here this year with her old english Sheepdog “Marshall.”

“I have raised generation after generation of good quality dogs and it’s fun to come and get them recognized,” she replied when asked about her passion.

Bandas added the key to these shows is preparation.

‘You have to obviously have a good dog and you have to learn how to groom your breed appropriately and show it appropriately,” she said.
