What Are The Chances?

Family with ties to P.A. experiences ‘small world’ across the border

A former Prince Albert resident recently had a “small world” moment.

Sarah Howell currently lives in Illinois, near the border with Missouri. Her son Joseph lives in St. Louis and one day, he and his girlfriend went inside a thrift shop and found something that reminded him of his mom’s past.

It turned out the shop was selling a Prince Albert Fire Department hat.

“He was just shopping… and he saw it,” said Howell.

She ended up moving to the U.S. to go to school around 30 years ago. She eventually met her husband while there and decided to stay there permanently.

Some members of her family still lived in P.A. so they would still visit from time to time. However, they haven’t been back for some time as her mother passed away in 2005 and the rest of her family ended up moving away.

Even though it’s been a while, Howell said her son still remembers the area.

“He hasn’t been there too many times; he was there when we were younger… but he knew about it.”

Despite being one of the U.S.’s more well-known cities, it isn’t known for being a top tourist destination.

To get to St. Louis from Prince Albert it would take just under 24 hours to drive as the two cities are around 2,440 km apart.

To say no one from P.A. has been to St. Louis would be a flat-out lie, however, the chances a P.A. hat would be found by somebody with ties to the city seems quite unlikely.

For Howell, this whole situation just brings up a lot of unanswered questions.

“I just thought that was pretty cool, wonder who was wearing that, how did it make its way down there,” she added.
