Local lacrosse star going for gold in U16 World Championships

A local lacrosse player has been named to Team Canada for the upcoming U16 IIJL World Championships this coming weekend.

Prince Albert’s Mason Crain was selected to don the maple leaf for the tournament, something that he said came as a surprise.

“It caught me off guard,” he said. “When my mom told me that I made the 20-man roster, I was very surprised.”

This will be Crain’s first time competing on the national stage and he expects the tournament will be a lot more competitive and fast-paced.

To combat this, he said he’s been putting in the work to prepare for this opportunity of a lifetime.

“I’ve been outside a lot this summer practicing,” he said. “I’ve also been in the gym and lifting some weights.”

Unlike the other World Championships, Team Canada will head south to Buffalo, New York. There they will fight to claim gold after winning bronze last year.

The tournament is set to begin on Sept. 2 and goes until Sept. 4.
