Weather doesn’t drown out the drive at this year’s Frank Dunn Triathlon

The weather didn’t stop over 100 athletes and teams from taking part in this year’s Frank Dunn Triathlon.

The annual race was once again held at Waskesiu with the backdrop of the lake and the national park welcoming racers from across the province and the country.

Race director, Mark Nagy, said at first they were concerned about the weather.

“It started to rain during the swim, pretty much rained most of the bike (portion) and then it stopped raining halfway through the course.”

All rain and clouds aside, the race was a successful one with two Saskatoon athletes coming out on top. Jaden Porte was the overall winner clocking in at 2:53:33 while Abby Miller was the top woman in the triathlon, finishing fifth overall at 3:11:53.

Meanwhile, three Prince Albert racers finished in the top ten including triathlon veterans Scott Kurytnik and Christina Charles. Kurytnik finished fourth while Charles came in eighth.

“Even though we didn’t have the greatest weather, this event was still a lot of fun and everyone was still smiling out on the race course,” said Charles, who noted she was not the only member of her family in the triathlon.

“My sister as well as my mom, we did the whole individual triathlon.”

Her sister, Ann Marie Charles, finished 10^th while mom, Dulcie Charles, was 85^th overall.

Charles and her sister and mother have won this event a combined 11 times.

Next up for Charles and other participants from this triathlon is the upcoming Ironman competition in Penticton.

Nagy, who has been the race director for over 30 years believes this is the best triathlon of the season strictly because of the location.

“The park is beautiful, there’s lots of wildlife, there’s foxes and bears and elk all over, it’s really a beautiful place to have a race.”

If that wasn’t enough, Nagy pointed out that even some of the local wildlife wanted to get involved.

“It’s kind of neat that there were 25 Elk that jumped in the water before the race. I’ve never seen that before and I’ve been going to that lake since I was 10 years old.”

Meanwhile, on the team side, the Jesus Christ Superstars won the overall race with a time of 3:22:26.
