Producers seeing good progress in production in North West

North West Saskatchewan producer, Agnes Morgenstern, is hoping for a good crop this year to help make up for last year’s drought.

She and her husband, Calvin, grow canola, wheat, barley and oats in the Loon Lake area.

Morgenstern is thankful for Mother Nature so far this season to help keep her crops in a healthy condition.

“We have gotten a nice amount of rain this year,” she said. “We just got a really good shot of rain here in the last couple of days of about an inch-and-a-half. So that really helped.”

Nothing is close to harvest yet, so the producer is hopeful that conditions remain promising so all her crops can develop well.

While some farmers experienced some crop damage from wind storms earlier this summer, that hasn’t been the case for Morgenstern.

“We have not had any issues with hail or that wind,” she said.

Looking ahead she is hoping for a bit of heat now to help the crops.

Morgenstern mentioned the farm has seen only a very few grasshoppers this year so that is another positive.

Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture crops extension specialist, Matthew Struthers, said the past week has been pretty good for farmers in the region.

“They had some rain up there in the northwest,” he said. “That will certainly help those later-seeded crops fill the last of their pods and the last of the heads of their cereals. That will maintain or even increase some of their yield-potential if those crops are well behind where they should be.”

Struthers said most producers now are hoping for some nice, moderately warm days, in the mid to high 20s ahead. Then, some intermittent light rains just to maintain that seed-fill for those crops still trying to fill with seed.

“And there are some crops up there that are still flowering, so that means those crops are still a ways away from harvest,” he added. “Those crops still need a bit of rain just to carry them through and keep them from burning off too soon in the heat.”
