Should Regina be called Canada’s Mustard Capital? Some believe so

Some in Regina are hoping the Queen City gets another nickname.

Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) wants people to acknowledge the area as the mustard capital of Canada.

Kirk Westgard, vice-president of agriculture for REAL, told farmnewsNOW they want people to understand just how much mustard seed is grown in the province and, more specifically, around the city.

“Mustard is almost eaten on every hot dog in North America, in every ballpark and every stadium, so we want to educate individuals on where it comes from.”

According to Westgard, around 75 per cent of the mustard exported by Canada is made with Saskatchewan seeds. He added Canada is also the third biggest exporter of mustard.

Along with sharing this story with people outside of the province, REAL also wants today’s youth to get interested and learn more about the importance of agriculture.

“In Regina, food is grown five to 10 kilometres away, you can see it growing in the field.”

Meanwhile, to really cement the name of the mustard capital of Canada, a new brand of mustard is being created.

REAL has partnered with the Saskatchewan Food Centre to create Queen City Mustard.

This new brand is currently on sale at the Queen City Ex, taking place between Aug. 3–7. Kids are also getting the opportunity on Thursday and Friday to see the actual process of making the condiment.

“Kids get to see mustard getting made right in front of them… and they get to go home with their very own jar of Queen City Mustard.”

All the proceeds from the mustard at the event will be donated to the Regina Food Bank.
