MELFORT, Sask. — A new research agreement has been signed between Saskatchewan Pulse Growers and Limagrain Field Seeds.

Both parties will fund the pea and lentil variety research to be done by Limagrain crop breeders based in Saskatoon, Sask.

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers executive director, Carl Potts, said the research will target producer priorities such as herbicide tolerance in lentils, resistance to root disease in peas and lentils, as well as improving yield and protein content.

Canadian agriculture groups have launched a new campaign to bring awareness to the importance of this next harvest.

Farmers, processors, and exporters are being called upon by governments and countries around the world to step up to help alleviate the extreme pressure on the global food supply being caused by the war in Ukraine and global supply-chain challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This includes the plan to move grain based on the template provided by the grain sector, forming a council to track the progress of the collective agreement negotiations, updates from railways and container lines on their capacity plans and finding ways to measure how service providers are meeting their plans.

The Canada’s Ready campaign encourages anyone working in the agriculture industry to participate by taking a photo on the job and sharing it online with the hashtag #CanadasReady.

Nutrien Ltd. said it has entered into a deal to buy Brazilian company, Casa do Adubo S.A.

The company said the acquisition includes 39 retail locations under the brand Casa do Adubo and 10 distribution centres under the brand Agrodistribuidor Casal.

Nutrien said the deal supports its retail growth plan in Brazil and is expected to result in additional projected sales of about $400 million US, bringing its total annual sales in Latin America to about $2.2 billion US.

The transaction is pending approval from the Administrative Council for Economic Defense in Brazil.

Once the acquisition is complete, Nutrien will have 180 commercial units in Latin America, including customer-facing retail branches and experience centres, five industrial plants and four fertilizer blenders.
