Keepin’ cool: Prince Albert residents not sweatin’ the heat wave

Jul 12, 2022 | 5:00 PM

With daytime highs in the high 20s or early 30s for the next couple of days, and humidity even higher, residents in Prince Albert will likely be flocking to spray parks, pools, ice cream shops, and anywhere with some good air conditioning.

Six-year-old Vayda was among those enjoying the Crescent Acres Spray Park on Tuesday afternoon and had a simple answer when asked by paNOW what advice she would give someone to avoid heat stroke.

“Go in the water,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Scott family was enjoying the Kinsmen Park spray pad. Sheila Scott acknowledged she gets concerned for her kids’ safety when temperatures rise but added she takes lots of measures such as ensuring they are drinking lots of water and having some cool treats.

“We’ll hang out in the basement if we have to or find someplace like this to cool off,” she said.

Parkland Ambulance has issued a reminder to people, to wear a big hat when outdoors, as well as sunscreen, and sunglasses, and most importantly drink lots of water.

Jake Williamson and his family were enjoying some ice cream at Summer Delight. He too acknowledged the need to be extra cautious when temperatures heat up

“I try to keep myself knowledgeable about it but the heat definitely does concern me having a kid,” he said.

Meanwhile, Colin Thorpe at Thorpe Bros. confirmed their phones have been ringing off the hook this past week for service work, as well as new installs. With respect to advice, Thorpe encouraged those who have questions about their existing unit, to not wait until the last minute to have it checked and to also make sure the outdoor unit is kept clean.

“Free of the fuzz from the trees. You’ll want to take the sides off and give it a good wash and vacuum it out with a hose,” he said. “That will take a lot of strain off it during these hot days.”

With respect to people looking to get a new one, Thorpe said the wait time for new installs is next to nothing.

“Because we have had such a cool spring, it’s been a late start and people haven’t really been thinking about it,” he said.
