Ex-Raider Manson to remain with Oilers coaching staff

It may have been assumed given the success he enjoyed this year, but now it’s official: a former member of the Prince Albert Raiders coaching staff and former Raiders player will be in the NHL coaching ranks for the foreseeable future.

The Edmonton Oilers announced on Thursday that Dave Manson will remain with the team for the 2022-23 season.

Manson, a 55-year-old who was born in Prince Albert, joined the Oilers coaching staff midway through the 2021-22 season after the team fired their head coach on February 10. He came to the team as an assistant under newly promoted head coach Jay Woodcroft.

The former long-time NHLer had been an assistant coach with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, Edmonton’s affiliate, since the 2018-19 season. Prior to that, he had been on the Raiders coaching staff from 2002-03 to 2007-08. He then re-joined the staff as an associate coach from 2012-13 until 2017-18 before leaving for the professional ranks.

During his playing career, Manson was a member of the Raiders for 212 games from the 1983-84 season until 1985-86. He went on to a lengthy NHL career spanning 16 seasons in which he played 1103 games for seven teams. He played 431 games for the Chicago Blackhawks alone.

Following his promotion to the NHL, Manson was responsible for the Oilers’ defensive group. The Oilers went 26-9-3 after he and Woodcroft took over, en route to an appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Once in the playoffs, they beat the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames in best-of-seven series before falling to the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final for the team’s best playoff run since the 2005-06 season. The Avs roster included Dave’s son, Josh.

Manson is one of four members of the coaching staff who the Oilers announced today would return for next season. The other three members are assistant coach Glen Gulutzan, goalie coach Dustin Schwartz, and video coach Jeremy Coupal.
