Struthers Lake plans two days of celebrations for Canada Day

Jun 28, 2022 | 1:00 PM

With Canada Day falling on a Friday this year, many communities will make a weekend of it with their Canada Day celebrations.

Among them is Struthers Lake Regional Park, which has two days’ worth of festivities planned.

From fireworks to a fried chicken supper, this is a weekend the regional park has circled on the calendar for a long time. Sitting roughly 50 minutes from Prince Albert, and about 45 from Melfort, the park could well see people from both cities coming out to take part in the busy weekend.

“We have family fun and games and fireworks,” said Cheryl Crooks, one of the park managers at Struthers Lake. “At 11:00, the kids’ bike parade starts at the play park. From 1:00 to 3:00 we have kids games in the park, face painting and doing tattoos.”

Beach volleyball will also be part of the afternoon on Canada Day, as will sandcastle building with judging taking place at 4:00. The fireworks begin at dusk.

Shifting over to Saturday, there’s another slate of games from adult plastic bat-and-ball to a kids’ treasure hunt. One of the nicer aspects of this year’s Canada Day weekend is that it will be a full weekend, unlike the last two years where Canada Day has fallen in the middle of the week.

“It’s absolutely perfect,” said Crooks. “We have lots of campers coming on Thursday already so it should be a great weekend, I think, as long as the hail stays away.”

There will be an even more celebratory aspect to this year’s event, as there have been for many other events this spring and summer. Without COVID restrictions, the hope is more people will flock to the park for a full weekend.

“It’s going to be nice to see the people again,” Crooks said. “It’s been pretty quiet out here at Struthers, it’s been a cooler spring. We’re hoping the weather is looking a little bit better. We’re looking for some hot weather and to see lots of kids out in our spray park. We’ve got that all ready to go and the water slide is in the water and ready to go.”

Crooks added they haven’t had any hail at Struthers Lake but they know of many other communities that have had it, so they’re hoping to keep their hail-free streak going. Environment Canada forecasts sunny weather both Friday and Saturday for Melfort and Prince Albert.
