Joan Margaret Neefs
May 21, 1945 – June 18, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected, but peaceful passing of our dear Mom and Grandmother, Joan Neefs (nee MacDonald), with her loving son by her side at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the age of 77.
Mom was born in Shellbrook, SK – the youngest of seven children, to Roderick and Margaret MacDonald. Mom began her childhood at the family’s home in Mont Nebo, SK. When she was 3 months old her father passed away and her strong, loving mother began raising her children on her own. Before Mom started school, they moved to Prince Albert where Mom attended school at Queen Mary. She attended PACI for high school and that is where she met the love of her life, Louis. They were married on September 4, 1965 and together lovingly and proudly raised 3 children – Jasmin, Tara, and Lindsey. Together, they instilled a strong sense of family and imparted the values of kindness, honesty, and respect. Mom cherished her family and always put us first. She taught all three of us to be strong, independent, and loving. She also made sure we went to church every Sunday and to put our faith in God.
Mom had a clerical background and early on worked for a law office and an accounting firm. When her children were born, she became a full-time mom. She cooked the most delicious meals, made the most amazing dill pickles, threw the best birthday parties, and took time to sew clothes, puppets, and costumes. She introduced her children to Elvis and many country singers like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and Willie Nelson. Mom loved to dance and her and Dad often went out with family and friends. Mom also loved spending evenings at home, making popcorn, playing cards, watching movies, and dancing with us in the living room. When Lindsey started school, she returned to work part time at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Prince Albert. Later on, she was proud to be employed with the provincial government, at Saskatchewan Probation Services in Prince Albert, where she retired in 2010. She was happy to get to spend more time at home with Louis and with her 3 grandchildren, whom she absolutely adored. Maggie, Abby, and Bryce loved spending summers at the cabin and always looked forward to “Grandma’s Restaurant” at breakfast time, where she cooked them whatever they desired!
Mom will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Jasmin (Karl Tiessen) of Prince Albert, SK; her daughter, Tara (Brent Mayoros) of Dawson Creek, BC; her son, Lindsey Neefs of Calgary, AB; and her 3 precious grandchildren: Maggie, Abby, and Bryce. She is also mourned by her sisters Muriel Young and Inez MacDonald; her brother, Victor (Karen) MacDonald; her sister-in-law, Diana MacDonald; many much-loved nieces and nephews, and also her close friends.
Joan was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Louis Neefs; her parents, Roderick and Margaret MacDonald; her mother and father in-law, Marie and Robert Neefs; her brothers and sisters-in-law: Norman (Belle) MacDonald, Hector MacDonald, and Leonard (Jane) MacDonald; her brother-in-law, Robert Young; her sisters-in-law: Lucille (John) Brown, Yvette (Nick) Danyluk, Roberta (Leon) Tournier, and Raymonde (Tony) Wingerter; and a number of other close family members.
We would like to take this time to thank all those who have helped us at this difficult time. We sincerely appreciate it.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27 at 11:00 am at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 28 St. West, Prince Albert, SK. Interment will be held at St. Luke’s Cemetery, Mont Nebo, SK.
