P.A. residents raise over $2K in separate Ukraine fundraisers

Separate Ukrainian fundraisers in Prince Albert were able to raise around $2,200 combined.

Terry Chitrenia decided to set up a booth at the local Street Fair on Saturday where he accepted donations and held multiple raffles for the families who’ve recently moved to the city.

He decided to do so after imaging himself in their shoes as his father was born in Ukraine.

Chitrenia is still trying to figure out how much he was able to raise, but he believes it’ll end up between $500 and $600.

He told paNOW he believes he could’ve raised more.

“Some of the raffles didn’t go very well. (People) were looking at them but they never really wanted to buy tickets.”

Despite this, Chitrenia believes the overall fundraiser was a success.

He added the leftover items not bought will just be given to the families.

“I have some coffee left over and I got some other stuff, so the lady is going to come and pick that up for the Ukrainian families.”

Chitrenia thanked all the businesses who sponsored him and the people who helped him raise the funds.

Meanwhile, two grannies with Ukrainian roots decided they wanted to help people still in the country.

Olga Karasiuk and Olga Daschuk held a craft and bake sale on Saturday, with help from other seniors, and were able to raise over $1,600.

“We never thought we’d reach a $1,000, we didn’t think we would, but we did,” added Karasiuk.

The funds are being given to Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal. Karasiuk noted they decided to support this cause because it’s run by the Canadian Red Cross.

“There are so many scams and one thing and another going on… and everybody knows you can’t go wrong with the Canadian Red Cross.”

She, just like Chitrenia, thanked everybody who helped and donated to their cause “from the bottom of our hearts.”
