Raiders blueliner Allan named to Hockey Canada camp

After the trade of captain Kaiden Guhle, the Prince Albert Raiders needed some of their other defensemen to step up in a big way.

Nolan Allan was among those who did, and his efforts have clearly caught the attention of Hockey Canada.

Allan is one of 14 defensemen named to the summer camp roster for Hockey Canada that will be part of their process of determining the team for the World Juniors in 2022-23 in Halifax and Moncton. The selection camp will take place July 23-27 in Calgary.

It was a career year offensively for Allan in every major category. The first-round pick of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks in 2021 posted seven goals and 34 assists in 65 games, not only setting career highs but outdoing his career totals in all those categories.

It wasn’t just the points Allan put up that drew praise, however, it was the span of time in which he put them up and the step his production took when the spotlight was thrust on him. From the trade of Guhle on Dec. 1 to the end of the season, the Raiders played 47 games. Allan amassed 31 of his points in that time.

Points tell only part of the story where Allan is concerned. His physical style and shutdown ability were what drew the Blackhawks to him in the first place, and that hard-nosed style will no doubt be something Hockey Canada is looking for at their camp.

That style is also one Hockey Canada is well familiar with as Allan has worn the Maple Leaf before. He was named to the U18 team in 2021 that went on to win a gold medal at the World U18 Championships in Texas.

The prospective blue liners for this group also include NHL first-rounders Brandt Clarke (eighth overall by Los Angeles in 2021) and Corson Ceulemans (25^th overall by Columbus in 2021). It also features WHLers Denton Mateychuk, Owen Pickering, and Kevin Korchinski, all of whom are probable first round picks in the coming NHL draft.

The full camp roster is comprised of four goaltenders, 14 defensemen, and 26 forwards.

Twenty-six of these players have been drafted into the NHL already, eight of them in the first round.
