P.A. currently housing several Ukrainian families fleeing home country

Several Ukrainian families have left their home country and are now living in Prince Albert.

According to Sonya Jahn, who’s looking after all the refugees, a total of 13 families are expected to be coming to the city with nearly half already here.

All of them are women and children as men who are at least 18 years old must stay in Ukraine and help fight off Russia’s invasion.

Jahn told paNOW that many are currently trying to adjust to their new surroundings.

“They’re still experiencing a little bit of jet lag as well as a new community to bring their children to.”

Along with getting situated in their new homes, one of the first tasks the families are doing is setting up the children in their new schools. Jahn noted these schools have simply been very welcoming.

Despite everyone staying busy, it’s too hard for them not to think about their home country.

“They’re constantly thinking about their home and what they left behind and what will be left of their home and all of their belongings,” added Jahn.

Meanwhile, the community has already come together to support these families.

Jahn added she’s been collecting donations since April with many providing clothing, shelter, as well as funds for groceries.

“All of the families are very grateful for the kindness our community has shown.”

Those who want to support them in some way can contact Jahn by calling 306-930-9721. Right now, they’re good for clothing donations, however, they may need more in the future as there’s still the possibility more families may move to the area.
