Meals From The Farm, a huge success at Westview school

Jun 5, 2022 | 9:45 AM

Several Prince Albert students took part in a special day to learn more about where their food comes from.

Meals From The Farm, an initiative from Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan and Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan, took place at six schools across the province earlier this week, including Westview Public School.

“It’s a chance for kids to think about how the food that they’re eating got from the farms and ranches where it is grown to their plates,” said Clinton Monchuk, executive director of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan. “Lots of times, we don’t think about the fact that the food that your local restaurant is serving likely has ingredients that were produced right in here in our province.”

The other schools participating were in Regina, Yorkton, Lloydminster, and Saskatoon.

Grade 4/5 students were provided with a catered lunch, along with a Meals From the Farm bag that includes snacks, activities, pencils, recipes, and seeds for the garden.

“Meals From the Farm is a wonderful hands-on opportunity for kids to investigate how farmers grow the foods we eat,” said principal Cheryl Arcand.

One student said Meals from the Farm was “the BEST day ever!!!”

Arcand said the class couldn’t decide which part of the day was their favourite. Some said the Kahoot online challenge was the best because of the classroom prize they could win.

Others said it, while others enjoyed the virtual tour of Clinton Monchuk’s egg barn.

“Staff and students from Westview Public School would like to send a big shout out to Farm & Food Care SK and Agriculture in the Classroom SK for inviting us to be a part of Meals from the Farm, hands down.”
