Jean Marie Eschyshyn (nèe Kardash) was born on January 13, 1931, in Saskatoon, SK, to Annie and Peter Kardash.
Jean and her family stayed in Saskatoon for a time, which is where she attended the Princess Margaret School. At the age of 7, her family moved to Prince Albert, and during her school days, she attended East Central School, Prince Edward School, and St. Mark’s High School, graduating in 1948 – 1949. Jean then graduated from the Prince Albert Collegiate Institute with a business degree. After graduating with her degree, Jean got a job in the Departments of Highways as a stenographer.
Jean was quite active in her community, she organized a youth club, namely the Ukrainian National Youth Federation in Prince Albert, and later the Club was moved to Red Deer Hall. Later she met and married Edward Eschyshyn, on October 5, 1952, and after she was married, she worked at the Dairy Pool as a bookkeeper for a while. From there, Edward and Jean moved to Toronto, and she continued to do books for about four years. Due to a farm accident that happened to Ed’s father, they returned to Saskatchewan.
Jean returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is when she began to sing in the Choir. Taking part in concerts, both in choir and Ukrainian dancing, which she also taught for a while. Jean also ran for the Carnival Queen three times, and was successful. With being quite active in the Midtown Community Center, both Ed and Jean received Life Memberships for their efforts.
They were blessed with two sons, a third had passed away at birth. After the children were in school, Jean went back to work for the Provincial Government, Department of Natural Resources. After working for four or five years, they were hoping for an addition to their family, which sadly did not happen. Jean retired from the Provincial Government, leading her to get involved with different crafts, such as ceramics, furniture refinishing, and upholstery.
In 1980, Jean decided to try her hand in the real estate profession, starting with Riverview Agencies, and later Block Brothers United Real Estate. Staying in real estate for over 10 years, and served as a Director and Representative to the Saskatchewan Real Estate Board.
During her lifetime, Jean had done lots of volunteer work, served as a treasurer for the Ukrainian Orthodox Ladies Auxiliary, the Prince Albert Multicultural Council, Prince Albert Single Parents Association, Prince Albert Minus One Club, and the Royal Purple Club. She was president, vice-president, and/or director of various clubs, and was a proud member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, O.O.R.P., A.B.C. Club, PA Single Club, Heritage Senior Club, and Birthday Girls Club.
Jean loved to travel and toured Canada, the United States, Spain, and nine other countries in Central Europe. She loved Arizona and Las Vegas, and spent time there during January and February. She also enjoyed playing Kaiser, Bing, and going to the Casino.
She was always very caring and loving towards her family and friends, and always put everyone’s needs before her own.
Jean leaves to mourn, her two sons, David (Nancy), Kenneth (Marilyn); her grandchildren, Evan, Jaime, Ashley, Dylan, Kristin; her great-grandchildren, Addy and Evie; her brother, George (Louise) Kardash; her sisters-in-law, Annie Wilchowy, Carol Eschyschyn; her niece, Tonya Kardash; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward in 1981; her son, Robert in 1970; her father, Peter Kardash in 1969; her mother, Annie Kardash in 2008; her brother, Mike (Joan in 2020) Kardash in 2007; her sister, Doreen in infancy; her mother-in-law, Katie in 1969; her father-in-law, Paul in 1950; her brother-in-law, John Eschyschyn in 2015; as well as her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The Funeral Service will be held for Jean at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, in Prince Albert, SK, with The Reverend Father Michael Lomaskiewicz officiating.
