MELFORT, Sask. – Canada’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom has accused Vladimir Putin of depravity for denying hungry people in African countries and other developing nations access to grain from Ukraine.

In remarks in London, Ralph Goodale said Russian troops have stopped grain exports from Ukraine, denying hungry people the food they need to survive.

He said the Russians are also stealing farm supplies and equipment and blockading ports, with deadly implications.

Ukraine is one of the world’s biggest exporters of wheat and sunflower oil, with developing countries in the Middle East and Africa among its biggest customers.

Goodale said Canada, the world’s third largest exporter of wheat, is looking at how it can fill the gap and provide emergency food.

A small poultry flock in British Columbia’s Comox Valley has tested positive for the avian influenza. It’s the first case on Vancouver Island.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said in a release that the H5N1 virus has now been found in seven flocks across the province.

CFIA said the infected location has been placed under quarantine and the Ministry of Agriculture has notified producers within a 12-kilometre radius about the positive test result.

B.C. has extended its order for all commercial poultry operators with more than 100 birds to move their flocks indoors until June 13.

Avian flu cases have been confirmed in several other provinces, but no infections have been detected in humans.

Xarvio Field Manager, from BASF Digital Farming, has expanded its weather station device connectivity options for farmers.

Weather data is collected from METOS Canada, and xarvio’s Field Manager agronomic algorithms and models.

Farmers will have access to enhanced crop production decisions for fields and field zones.

The collaboration is supported by a promotion giving xarvio field manager customers the opportunity to purchase a new METOS Canada by Pessl weather station device at a discounted price.
