MELFORT, Sask.— The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said Manitoba has its first case of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza.

Manitoba Agriculture said the case is in a commercial poultry flock.

The disease was confirmed Saturday in the Rural Municipality of Whitemouth, east of Winnipeg.

The infected premises has been placed under quarantine and CFIA said it will be establishing movement control measures on other farms in the area.

The agency also confirmed the disease in Rocky View County in Alberta on Saturday.

Although officials said the risk of transmission of avian influenza to humans is low, they warn that people should not touch dead birds or other wildlife with their bare hands.

Farm Management Canada’s Agricultural Excellence (AgEx) Conference will be hosting a hybrid event allowing participants to attend in-person in Canmore, Alta. or to join virtually.

It will bring together anyone from farmers to advisors, academia, organizations, private industry, and government looking for new ideas and opportunities to take their businesses to the next level.

Conference manager Denise Robertson said this year’s theme, Reaching New Heights, is a celebration of the opportunities ahead for Canadian agriculture.

“Join us to exchange expertise and insights to continue to position Canada’s farmers for success through farm management excellence,” Robertson said in a news release.

AdFarm and Agriculture for Life (Ag for Life) have renewed their collaboration to enhance agricultural education and promote farm safety.

Over the years, AdFarm supported Ag for Life in projects including the organization’s Harvest Gala, the classroom on wheels Rural Safety Unit, many publications including the Nourishing Minds series, and brand consultation.

In 2021, Ag for Life launched the Mission to Mars: Rural and Farm Safety Escape Mail youth publications and provided a variety of online activities, virtual field trips and cooking classes, and educational programs to children, youth, and adults.
