P.A. fastpitch player gaining unique experience against U.S. teams with 222’s

The 222’s Fastpitch teams based out of Saskatoon are making some noise south of the border this month.

The 222’s are a top team accumulated with players from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta who play in the winter and spring. Currently the U12 and U14 girls’ teams are in Sacramento, Calif. playing exhibition games against teams from the U.S. for the last two weeks with a tournament set to play this weekend.

Pitcher for the U14 team Abby Wasutyk, who’s from Prince Albert, said the experience has been great so far.

“It’s good to see how other girls perform so when I come back to my team in P.A. I can have more experience and help the other girls,” she said.

Wasutyk said it’s valuable experience for her and the other girls as they haven’t played very long together, whereas the teams they’re facing in California have been together all year long. They’re learning how to play with each other, which she said is a working process.

Wasutyk has been playing fastball for eight years and is currently a Grade 9 student at Ecole St. Mary High School.

The two coaches who own and operate the 222 Fastpitch program is Keith Mackintosh and Dean Holoien, and they have years of coaching experience, including at the national level. The program, according to their website is to provide elite instruction in every aspect of the game.

Wasutyk said it’s great to have coaches who can help develop their skills and have so much knowledge.

“Even if I’m pitching and they just look over and they see something wrong they can just tell us and they can work on drills with us. It’s been really good just to know that there’s someone that knows every little thing about every position and every little detail,” she explained.
