SaskEnergy to donate $20,000 after charity incentive reached in La Ronge

Mar 7, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story reported SJHL made a $200,000 donation. In fact, SaskEnergy donated $20,000. We have corrected the story and headline.

SaskEnergy will be donating a total of $20,000 to charity after 1,000 goals were scored on home ice during the 2021-2022 SJHL regular season.

The Crown Corporation pledged to donate $20 for every goal scored at home in a Saskatchewan market throughout the regular season, as #1,000 was scored on Friday night during the La Ronge Ice Wolves 4-1 victory over Flin Flon. With 4:15 remaining in the third period on an Ice Wolves’ power play, La Ronge defenceman Bryan Gilman took a pass from Ryley Morgan and snapped the much-anticipated marker past Bombers’ goaltender Cal Schell.

The $20,000 donation will be received by KidSport — a program aimed at helping youth participate in sports by reducing the financial pressures. According to the not-for-profit, high costs keeps 1-in-3 Canadian kids out of organized sport — especially children from marginalized or remote communities. The organization first began its work in 1993, and since then has expanded across Canada, giving tens of thousands of kids every year the opportunity to participate in organized sports leagues.

As for Gilman, he’s now set to be honoured by the league for scoring the SJHL’s 1,000th home-ice goal of the season. His power-play goal on Friday night marked his fifth goal of the season, while the California-born defenceman now has a total of 21 points in 53 games this season. The Ice Wolves are currently holding down the third spot in the SJHL’s Sherwood Division.

Teams throughout the league are also in competition to score the most goals on home ice in hopes of hoisting the “KidSport Cup” at the end of the season.
