Transit review and fireworks bylaw on Monday agenda

A review of the ‘difficult’ 2021 transit year will be put before council at the next regular meeting tonight. Frame defects on the city’s new bus fleet caused multiple problems last year.

In addition to having to run replacement buses, the City gave riders discounts which led to lower revenue.

Staff is proposing a bus fare review be done with the understanding that large passenger subsidies make the service financially unsustainable.

Council will also receive some wording changes that are proposed for the fire service bylaw, recently revised to control when fireworks can be lit in the city.

In January of this year, council voted in favour of banning the lighting of fireworks in the city but then decided two exceptions might be a good idea.

Staff were asked to come up with the correct wording that would allow people to ignite fireworks on New Year’s Eve and Canada Day.

Also on the agenda is a new airport plow truck and material spreader tender, lease agreement for Common Weal Community Arts, an exemption required from the Downtown Street Fair, appointments to committees, and work plans for the golf course, airport, community services and planning advisory committees.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. this evening at council chambers in city hall. Meetings are generally also viewable on the City’s YouTube channel.
