A team that endured a number of blow out style losses during the season was able to raise its sticks in celebration on Sunday.

The U18 AA Elks defeated Indigenous Sports Academy (ISA) 5-4, in the final of the inaugural team’s home tournament at the Richardson Pioneer Recreation Center. Manager Sheldon Moe told paNOW the boys worked very hard.

“I thought this weekend made the season a success,” he said.

Over the course of the three-day tournament, the Elks’ would win three out of four games, beating ISA on Friday 5-1 before losing to the Prairie Storm 4-3 Saturday morning, then blasting the Leduc Roughnecks 7-2 later in the day. Moe credited the work done by head coach Doug Hobson.

“Individually we are not best team on paper but when the boys play together we showed we can give any team a good fight,” he said.

This year was the first year ISA played in the league and Moe said he had a lot of respect for their final opponents.

“What they are doing is great for those young Indigenous people,” he said. “I think it’s a great idea and they should carry on doing what they are doing,” he said.

The Shellbrook Elks finished their season with a record two wins, 29 losses and two ties.

The tournament this past weekend was created with the idea of giving league teams who did not make the playoffs a chance to continue playing hockey past Feb.14.

“I am going do it again next year and it’s gonna be bigger and hopefully in Prince Albert and Shellbrook,” Moe said.
