Terence (Terry) Christian Ganes passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 16th, 2022, with his loving wife Lorisa, and his daughter Kristie by his side, listening to his favorite songs by “The Beachboys”, “Van Morrison”, “The Temptations”, “Roy Orbison”, and “Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons” …. all the oldies but goodies! He passed away in Birch Hills, the little town where he was born and raised. Terry would have been 74 years old on February 25th, 2022.
Terry was very active in sports at an early age, playing hockey, ball, golf, and curling. His most prominent role in hockey was goaltender, at one point being asked to play for the Estevan Bruins.
He met and married his wife, Lorisa, when he was working for NorcanAir in La Ronge, SK. They were married on July 1st, 1972, this year would have been their 50th wedding anniversary. They raised their three children in La Ronge where he enjoyed fishing, boating, and skidooing with his family. He managed the Liquor Store in La Ronge until they moved back to his hometown of Birch Hills in 1995, and then made the daily trek from Birch Hills to Humboldt to manage the Liquor Store there. Terry retired in 2008 and his wife retired in 2009. Both had a love of golf and were often at the golf course together. They were lucky enough to be able to take a few trips together, but his main love was his family, and his home (a trait he got from his beloved mother). He loved every chance he got to golf with his older son, Tim, and especially the times spent having breakfast with him before Tim went back to his shifts in the mine. He shared a love of firearms (shooting ranges…. not animals so much!) with his son, Micheal. Terry had plans to spend more time with him at shooting ranges in B.C. He loved his daughter Kristie; he was so proud of her accomplishments. He became especially close to Kristie’s daughter Kira, who Terry adored. He was most happy at Christmas when he had all his children and grandchildren home. He also loved visiting the in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Terry and Lorisa have many good friendships in La Ronge and Birch Hills. He loved his time golfing in La Ronge with his in-laws, & Ivan and Rita Goertzen. Terry loved the hours spent at Eagle Point Resort with the Poirier’s and other golfers, returning to La Ronge to take part in a memorial golf tournament for his buddy, Ivan, and renewing friendships with many other golfers. We fondly think of friends like Anne and Tom Sanderson as well as so many more. His friends in Birch Hills would be too many to name! He talked of hockey games with his buddies, a golf tournament where he was matched against Adrian Quayle. He loved the times’ Larry Strand would come out and find us on the course and golf the rest of the round with us. He loved when he’d run into his old school buddy Phil Sampson, and they’d chat. He was so pleased when his best man, Robert Newton would pop in for a visit on his way thru town. There are so many more people to mention, friends he met on his walks with his little dog, Jax. His buddy across the street, Ron Bodnarchuk invoked Terry’s interest in archery. There are just so many people who touched his life. Terry’s family will miss him terribly. However, we know that he is done with his nightmare and on his way to his mom, who will be overjoyed to see him. Hoping his golfing buddies Larry and Ivan will show him the ropes and that he’ll be able to golf on the most beautiful, magical, heavenly golf courses! Not to mention the lakes and rivers that his best friend Bertle Vancoughnett will take him to and the fish stories that will come from that will be phenomenal!
Terry is survived by his wife Lorisa (nee Smith); his sons Tim (Renee) and Micheal (Laura Stasiuk); his daughter Kristie; his grandchildren Shelby, Brandi, Kaleb, Brody, & Kira; his great-grandchildren Blakely, Tayte, & Quinn; his father Arnold Ganes; his sisters Heather (Bob Cockwill), & Leanne Ganes; his brother-in-law Gary (Marlene); his sister-in-law Cheryl (Maurice Servant); his brother-in-law Tracy, as well as many nieces and nephews who he enjoyed immensely.
Terry was predeceased by his mother Evelyn, who he adored; his mother-in-law Joyce Smith; & his father-in-law John R. Smith.
