Freedom Convoy being held in P.A. in recognition of restrictions being lifted

The freedom convoy in Ottawa may be coming to an end but that’s not stopping some in Prince Albert from doing their own.

On Saturday, Feb. 19, vehicles are slated to drive around the city in recognition of the Saskatchewan government’s decision to remove COVID restrictions earlier this month.

“We decided as a group that maybe this might be a good way to… I don’t know if the word is celebrate because I understand some people aren’t happy about that but there are a lot of people who are,” said Melanie Markling, co-organizer.

The nationwide convoy was started last month in protest of a vaccine mandate put in for truckers who were driving between Canada and the U.S. It quickly morphed into a movement against all COVID restrictions.

“I think showing the support that they have throughout the country is so important, it’s so important for people all over to see that,” Markling added.

She noted she’s disappointed to see many individuals get arrested in Ottawa, however, she understands those who live in the city and have been impacted in some way may feel differently.

Markling is hoping to see around 100 vehicles take part. However, she’s doesn’t want to make any expectations.

“I think it’s a success either way if there were just five cars or 100 cars.”

No matter the number, Markling stated there are no plans to turn this into a blockade. She added P.A.’s police service has been given a heads up to ensure everyone’s safety.

Vehicles are slated to hit the road around 2 p.m. with everyone meeting at a parking lot near 42nd St West and Highway 2.
