Frederick John Read
November 1, 1953 – February 11 , 2022
John suddenly passed away at his home in Victoria, B.C. on February 11 , 2022. He was born on November 1 , 1953 in Prince Albert , Sask. to proud parents Fred and Elaine Read – the third born of their ten children. John grew up in Prince Albert and spent alot of his younger years playing baseball and hockey. Later on in life, John discovered his true passion – playing golf.
Graduating from Riverside High School in 1971 , John then went on to work for the City of Prince Albert up until 1976 . At this time , he decided to move out west to Calgary. There he pursued to further his education and obtained his Business Administration diploma from Mount Royal College. After living in Calgary for a few years, he ventured out further west to Burnaby B.C. He continued his career in sales and marketing and worked for Mitel and Toshiba for many years. After his wife Ursala passed away in 2012, John finally decided to enjoy a more relaxing lifestyle and retired in 2014.
The love of his life was sports – especially golf. He lived and breathed golf. He was an avid member of The Royal Colwood Golf Club, playing many rounds of golf and socializing. John was also a great teacher of golf; he had lots of patience with rookie golfers and would gladly share his knowledge with family and friends.
Watching all kinds of sports on T.V. like baseball, hockey and football was another favorite past time . He would kick back in his recliner , and if game got boring might endure a nap or two.
His family was also very dear to his heart, as he liked to be kept in loop about what his sisters and brothers were doing , who was getting married, what babies were born ,,,, However his family had to lure him back to Saskatchewan whenever a special occasion occurred like a family reunion or a wedding. John would only come back home to visit during the summer months when the weather was warm, but would always complain about the mosquitoes. He was truly accustomed to B.C.’s warmer climate. Even though he did not travel back home too often, he genuinely enjoyed being around his family and friends.
John was also fortunate to do some travelling throughout his life. He backpacked in Europe, made trips to Hawaii, Mexico and golfed on some beautiful courses in the states, as well as in Canada. In the last few years, he also enjoyed spending winter months in Arizona with special friend Donna.
His greatest love besides golf, was being surrounded by friends and family, socializing over a cocktail or two ,telling stories, funny memories and having lots of laughs. However ,he struggled with good byes …he was known to sneak away, as was easier for him that way.
Left to cherish his memory are his five sisters : Wanda(Dave Witcombe) and family Chris and Jana ; Donna (Bobby Harris) ; Debbie (Neil Harris) and family Jody , Ryan ; Sherry (Jerry Anderson) and family Jarrett,Tanner,Kristyn ; Buffi (Paul Levac) and family Megan,Tayler ,Katelyn. Also his three brothers : Jerry Read ; Rod Read and family Marcus,Molly,Emily ; Tim Read (Rosie Read)
John is predeceased by his wife Ursala Read (nee Bolger) , his parents Fred and Elaine Read, and brother Robby Read
He shared many lifetime friendships with very special people who were like family to him. Especially during the last couple years when he endured some health issues … friends like AlanĀ and Connie Logue , Faye Griffin, Donna Dempsey, Lindsey Lent, Lorne and Dixie Tuck.
John will be kept alive in our fond memories and through the love we all shared for him.
A special thanks to Amber at Tapestry Victoria Harbour for her caring and support.
A Celebration for John will be held at Waskesiu this summer – date yet to be determined.
